Socio-Economic Impact of Adolescent Pregnancy and Early Motherhood in Suriname

UNFPA supported the development of the "Socio-Economic Impact of Adolescent Pregnancy and Early Motherhood in Suriname" report, which delves into the challenges posed by Adolescent Pregnancies and Early Motherhood (AP&EM) in Suriname. Its primary goal is to assess and quantify the multifaceted impact of AP&EM on the economic, social, and health well-being of young females in the Suriname.

This comprehensive study examines the consequences of AP&EM on the educational attainment, employment opportunities, and earning potential of adolescent mothers. It also explores the social and health implications, including the lack of knowledge about family planning and contraceptive use among these girls. The report further analyzes the disproportionate incidence of AP&EM in rural and interior regions and its correlation with household welfare status.

By providing essential evidence at both sub-regional and national levels, this report aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of AP&EM in Suriname. Its ultimate objective is to advocate for strategic investments in prevention measures to minimize economic, social, and health losses and to alleviate the adverse impacts of AP&EM on the lives of young females in the country.
